This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin. The statewide tornado drill will take place this Thursday, April 10. All municipal warning sirens in Grant County will be sounded at 1:45pm and 6:45pm. The drill is a great opportunity for families and businesses to review and practice severe weather plans.
Grant County ranks second among Wisconsin Counties for number of tornadoes and first for number of flooding events. The attached packet discusses ways people can better prepare for severe weather. Some tips include:
- Create an emergency plan and practice it
- Know where designated shelters are located at home, work, and school. Be ready to go there when a tornado warning is issued.
- Have multiple ways to receive alerts about approaching severe weather. Outdoor warning sirens, NOAA weather radios, local media and mobile devices are all important tools. Don’t rely on any single source for important life-saving information.
- Grant County’s Code Red Notification Service can serve as one of your ways to receive automated weather alerts. People who live or work in Grant County are encouraged to register for Code Red at the following link: https://accountportal.onsolve.net/grantcountywinotifications
- If you have a mobile device, make sure it is enabled to receive Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). On many devices, that option is available in the settings menu. Find out more about WEA at https://readywisconsin.wi.gov/be-informed/be-alert/.
- Create an emergency kit for your home. Find tips for making a kit at https://readywisconsin.wi.gov
